mTw see off SK for IEM5 bronze

mTw have picked up the bronze medal at the IEM5 World Championship with a 2-1 victory over SK Gaming after a dramatic third map.

On de_inferno, mTw began as CT, as they started out the brighter, reaching an early 3-1 lead, before SK responded and picked up four rounds in a row. The Danish team still tried to regain the lead, but SK showed some good coordination in offensive duties as they captured a 10-5 lead at half time, with dennis showing an impressive 20-7 score.

In the second half, an aggressive CT strategy from SK bore fruits as mTw’s players found themselves cornered and had no chance to react. The rest of the second session practically went to SK, who only conceded one round as CT to win the map 16-6.

mTw take the lead

The next map, de_nuke, kicked off with SK on the offensive side, and the Swedish team opted for a slow strategy in the pistol round, putting four players in the middle, while GeT_RiGhT was deployed outside. But that strategy proved to be ineffective, as mTw took the lead, until the very next round, when SK took control of the map thanks to some good Desert Eagle work by face. The following rounds went back and forth, as neither team could prove who was superior, but in the latter stages of the first half, mTw showed a stronger figure as they were up 9-6 at the break.

In the Terrorist pistol round, mTw’s Martin "trace" Heldt went for a Desert Eagle, like he has done many times before, and after taking f0rest’s head off with a single shot and dying right after, Oliver "minet" Minet picked up the deagle and took down three other SK players to win the round for his team. mTw then went on win three more rounds to become just three rounds away from victory. SK then responded, getting their first round, but mTw were just all over the map, as they picked up a comfortable 16-8 victory.

On de_train, mTw won the knife round and as such they made the obvious choice which was to start on the stronger CT side. However, that didn’t do much for them at first, as SK got a convincing 5-0 lead following a very confusing pistol round. mTw were only able to score in the sixth round, but SK did not let the Danes build up momentum as they went 9-1 up, with some good awp work by RobbaN, who has often been criticized at the event. From then on, though, it was all mTw, as the Danes finally got their game going and reduced the deficit to three rounds.

Now on the Terrorist side, mTw won the pistol round when it seemed that there was nothing they could do, but Heldt took care of the situation and won a 1on2 situation with just 11 hp. Having grabbed the second and third rounds, mTw equalized the match, but they wanted more and kept adding rounds, as SK were forced to call a timeout after being down 12-9. A quick chat seemed to do SK some good, as the Swedes finally managed to score. With the scoreline 14-10, mTw lost two rounds in a row, and asked for a timeout to rethink their strategies for the rest of the map. That move produced a successful result, as mTw got three match points, but then lost to a quick Desert Eagle rush by SK, which forced them to save for the last round. However, mTw could not capitalize on their last match point, and so SK forced the game into overtime.

After this, a rather awkward moment, the ESL decided to redirect the stream to the main stage, oblivious to the fact that SK had equalized, and not won the map. After realizing the mistake, they turned it back on in the right match. In OT, SK, who started on the CT side, went for a 4-1 lead. In the second half, mTw won the initial round, but then saw SK bounce back to get three match points. However, the Danes kept their cool and pulled off a comeback to level the match on 20 rounds.

The second OT was much faster, as SK played some really aggressively Terrorist play, which was effective to a certain extent, as they picked up two rounds. mTw were now in the lead, just by a solitary round (23-22), but they showed a stronger T side now, and added three more rounds to win the last map 26-24.
